“I Need to Think About It.” What Is Your Patient Really Asking?
Oct 09, 2026A patient hears the treatment recommendation, then leaves without scheduling.
Their explanation? “I need to think about it.”
Before your team can help, they need to understand what the patient is thinking about.
Three Questions That May Be Holding Patients Back
Often, hesitation comes down to:
Will it hurt? The patient needs to understand what to expect and how the clinical team can support their comfort.
How much time will it take? They may be concerned about appointment lengths, multiple visits, or time away from work.
How will I pay for it? They may want the treatment but need help understanding payment and financing options.
The next question your team asks can help uncover the concern.
Start With Curiosity
Try asking:
“What would be helpful to talk through before you decide?”
Pause and listen. If the patient has difficulty explaining, you can ask whether their concern is comfort, time, or payment.
Then involve the right team member to address it.
Make the Financial Conversation Clear
When affordability is the concern, give patients a clear explanation of the options your practice offers.
A Financial Agreement Form helps organize those choices, including what is due at scheduling and when the remaining payment is due. Third-party financing may give eligible patients a way to spread the cost over time.
Once the patient understands their options, confirm the appointment or agree on a specific follow-up step.
Bring This to Your Next Team Huddle
Watch the video together and discuss:
“When a patient says, ‘I need to think about it,’ how do we find out what is holding them back?”
Practice asking, listening, and responding to each of the three concerns.

In the next Coaching Clip, we’ll look at how the whole team can prepare for these conversations before the patient reaches checkout.
