How to Handle Compensation Questions During Check-Ins

Don't Let One Question Keep You From Leading

If you've ever delayed a one-on-one check-in because you were worried about what your team member might ask, you're not alone.

One of the most common concerns I hear from dentists is:

"What if they ask me for a raise?"

That single question prevents many leaders from having conversations their teams truly need.

Here's what I want you to remember:

A leadership check-in is not a compensation meeting.

It's not a performance review.

It's a conversation focused on connection, support, and growth.

If compensation comes up, don't feel pressured to solve it in the moment.

Instead, acknowledge the question and gently redirect the conversation.

Try saying:

"That's something we can talk about during your annual compensation review. Today, I'd like to focus on checking in with each other."

This response is respectful, clear, and keeps the purpose of the meeting intact.

More importantly, it sets healthy expectations.

When your team knows there is a designated time to discuss compensation, they can fully engage in conversations about communication, development, and support.

As leaders, we often avoid conversations because we imagine the worst-case scenario.

In reality, most team members simply want to feel heard.

When you create space for regular check-ins, trust grows.

Communication improves.

Problems are addressed sooner.

And leadership becomes less stressful

Coaching Tip

Don't avoid a conversation because you're worried about one question. Prepare for it instead.

Confidence comes from preparation.
